The Kersten Lumber  Photo Gallery

How our Lumber mill works

After the logs go through the debarker which takes the bark off the logs, they go to the head saw. That is the picture of the guy sitting in a cab working the controls with a monitor on his left. We tried to get a picture of the log being sawed, but it was too dark and you couldn’t see anything. This guy cuts the log into a large square block called a Cant. From there it goes to a band saw called a resaw, he cuts a board off the cant, that board can either move to the edger where boards can be squared up or if the board is already square it can move to the grader. The rest of the cant will move to another grader where he will flip the cant around to get the best cutting, then it will go back through the band saw. The cant will keep going around in a circle until it is cut into boards. After the boards are graded, they go through the trimmer. The trimmer cuts the board to the correct length (6', 8', 10' or 12') depending on how the board was graded to get the best grade. Then the boards go to the green chain to be piled. The scrap lumber that comes off the board falls into a vibrator that moves the scraps into the chipper that chops the scraps into little chips that can be used by paper mills or used in landscaping.
